That was the advice Nicola had for her fellow students after passing her final GED subject test. After 10 months of hard work and studying, Nicola had finally achieved her goal of earning her GED. Nicola came to Bluffton from Jamaica a year and a half ago and decided to get her GED to help further her education and advance in her career.
Nicola proved herself to be a dedicated student as soon as she joined Bluffton Self Help’s GED Preparation program. Her first two classes were Math and Language Arts, where she always completed her classwork and asked plenty of questions when she needed extra assistance to understand the material. After a semester of studying, Nicola’s young son joined her in Bluffton from Jamacia, creating scheduling and childcare barriers for her, but that didn’t stop her hard work. Nicola continued to study, even when getting to class became difficult.
With a combination of online studying, in-person classes, and working individually with a tutor, Nicola was able to pass all four subject tests for the GED in less than a year. Now Nicola looks forward to going to school to become a licensed nurse practitioner, so she can care for those in need and provide a brighter future for her son.
Congratulations on all your hard work, Nicola, we know you will do great things for our Lowcountry community.
