It’s the first day of school and you are nervous. Your parents said you will be fine but you don’t feel fine. You are scared. You don’t have any school supplies and you see all the other children with their new backpacks filled with school supplies. You are told to visit the school social worker. You haven’t done anything wrong but you are even more nervous now. When you arrive, you are greeted with a big smile. Plus, you are given a brand new backpack filled with all the school supplies you need. Now you know everything will be fine. Your parents were right. The backpack even has ear buds for school supplied electronics!!!
You can make this scene a reality by donating school supplies to Bluffton Self Help. Bluffton Self Help gives these school supplies directly to the school social workers knowing the children who really need them will be the recipients. Bluffton Self Help staff also provide vouchers to the school social workers so the children in need can obtain new school uniforms.
By working directly with the school social workers, which we have done since the inception of this program, children in need are guaranteed a great first day at school. Some parents contact the school a week prior to classes starting making sure, if they can’t afford the supplies, that a backpack is ready and waiting for their children in the social worker’s office.
Being prepared for the first day of school can greatly impact a student’s performance. It is estimated that over 2,800 students in Bluffton alone cannot afford the supplies needed for school. Last year Bluffton Self Help donors provided over 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to local children. Thank you and won’t you join us in this effort again this year!
