Bluffton Self Help is proud to celebrate the achievements of Kennedy Smalls, who received the Ida Martin Scholarship last year. A dedicated and ambitious young woman, Kennedy has recently graduated from the University of South Carolina-Columbia, hailing from Bluffton, SC.
Kennedy majored in sports and entertainment management, and during her time at USC, she interned with the women’s and men’s basketball teams as well as the football team. Her involvement didn’t stop there; she was an active member of her school community, participating in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. Kennedy’s college experience was rich and fulfilling, filled with learning, friendships, and community service.
The Ida Martin Scholarship played a crucial role in Kennedy’s academic journey. It enabled her to afford books for several classes and on-campus housing, easing the financial burden that often accompanies college life. Kennedy expressed her gratitude, stating, “In college, any amount of money is beneficial due to all the financial circumstances that come with it. This scholarship allowed me to spend money on other needs such as food and housing utilities. I will forever be grateful for the scholarships that were provided to me.”
Growing up in Bluffton, Kennedy was deeply connected to her community and Bluffton Self Help. She attended Campbell Chapel AME Church, where she met the late Ida Martin, an influential figure in her life. Kennedy recalls participating in church activities that supported Bluffton Self Help, such as canned goods and clothes drives. Her commitment to service extended to volunteering at the market distribution every Monday and Wednesday for two summers, where she found joy in meeting new people and helping her neighbors.
Kennedy’s story is a testament to the impact of community support and the value of giving back. Her experiences and accomplishments reflect the spirit of Bluffton Self Help and the legacy of Ida Martin.
To all the staff and volunteers at Bluffton Self Help, Kennedy extends her heartfelt thanks: “Thank you so much for all you do and will continue to do for our community.”
Bluffton Self Help is honored to have been a part of Kennedy’s journey and looks forward to supporting more students like her in the future.
