We rely on volunteers in every aspect of our mission. Last year, 274 volunteers donated 13,137 hours of their time, valued at $236,466.
Two of these volunteers were recently recognized for their commitment to our neighbors, our mission, and our community. Congrats to our 2022 Volunteers of the Year – Robert “Bobby,” Red Apron Volunteer of the Year, and Mike McCurdy, Tutor of the Year.
If you see these two gentlemen, please say thank you and congrats!
Robert Hallick, or Bobby as many call him, has been volunteering at BSH since 2017. During his 5+ years of service, he has volunteered in most if not all capacities within the Basic Needs programs. Currently, Bobby serves in the Market at the welcome desk on Monday nights greeting our neighbors when they shop for groceries. He also serves three days a week in the Resource Hub answering phones, registering clients for the Market, and providing community resources. During reverification and holiday toy registration, Bobby serves five days a week and takes pride in ensuring everyone who walks through our doors leaves with a smile. He is dedicated, passionate, caring, funny, and has made lasting impressions on everyone that he meets. Congrats to you Bobby for receiving this well-deserved award as our 2022 Volunteer of the Year and thank you for your dedication to Bluffton Self Help!
Mike McCurdy has worked diligently with adult learners in the Lowcountry for years as a dedicated volunteer. Mike has an incredible passion for giving back to his community and can often be found donating his time and talents to assist others in meeting their goals. Currently, Mike is instructing a class of Level 2 ESL learners in Hardeeville. Through Mike’s hard work, we are seeing his students make immense progress with their English skills as well as their confidence within the community. As a tutor, Mike sees firsthand the ways that increased education can positively impact the lives of our Lowcountry neighbors and has become a great advocate for Bluffton Self Help’s educational programming. Mike advocates passionately for Bluffton Self Help and has even been known to stop into our Learning & Literacy Centers to pick up flyers and information to give to those who may not know about Bluffton Self Help and the ways we can assist them. Mike is a tutor that we can always count on to go the extra mile. Whether he is helping our learning & Literacy Center staff or taking the extra time to help students understand tough concepts, Mike is always happy to do what he can for those around him. Mike’s giving spirit has allowed him to help many students along their English journey & gotten them closer to meeting their personal and professional goals. Thank you for all you do, Mike. We are lucky to have you!
