The idea began in January, after Extreme Makeover came to town, when a handful of women from Belfair got together and decided to create a fundraiser for Bluffton Self Help that would be unique, would capture the attention of plantation golfers, and had the potential to generate income for years to come. After tossing around many ideas, Sevens for HOPE was born. In May and June, Lowman developed and implemented the concept at Belfair and Moss Creek, backed by Markel’s Gifts, who have signed on as the tournament’s 2011 and 2012 title sponsor.
While it is a golf-related fundraiser, it is not another single-event golf tournament where proceeds go to a certain cause. The “Sevens” approach is a way for individuals or groups to add a little challenge to their game, by designating a period of time, usually a couple of weeks, they want to pledge a dollar amount for every “seven” they have on their scorecards. Players can also ask friends and neighbors to contribute by pledging. Local plantation clubs donate golf packages or golf related merchandise to the winners.
“It has turned out to be a huge amount of fun for the people who want play golf and give back at the same time. While we wish we could have raised more this year, we are pleased with our first efforts, and look forward to introducing this great opportunity to as many plantations as we can over the next year.”
