June 12, 2013, Bluffton, SC– Mrs. Ida Martin, age 86, founder of Bluffton Self Help, passed away peacefully late this afternoon surrounded by family members at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
The founder of one of the most-respected agencies in Bluffton, SC, one of Mrs. Ida Martin crowning achievements was when she received the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2011 in the White House for the work of this agency for the past 27 years. Martin’s is fondly remembered for asking President Obama if she could have a hug.
Martin has been recognized also at the local and state levels. In 1990, she was recognized at the state level, named Volunteer of the Year in South Carolina. In 2012 she was honored with a spot on the “Wall of Honor.” In addition, April 4 has been Ida Martin Day in the Town of Bluffton since 2011. She was also was the co-recipient of the Alice Glenn Daughtie Good Citizenship Award in February 2012.
“We will truly miss Mrs. Ida Martin,” said Tray Hunter, president of the board of directors. “I have personally been on the board for over six years. My work to further her cause has always been inspired by her dedication, drive and determination to work on behalf of our community members facing poverty and hunger.”
Mrs. Martin was also very active in her church, Campbell Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Old Town Bluffton, on 25 Boundary Street and missionary work around the country.
“Mrs. Ida Martin’s name and legacy in creating Bluffton Self Help will permanently be displayed on the front of the building,” said Peter Bromley, past president. “We shall never forget her and what she did for this community.”
“We knew an angel,” said Lili Coleman, executive director of Bluffton Self Help. “We all feel so privileged to work on her behalf and vow to carry on her legacy.” ###
