Have you seen them? Back-packs, binders and pencils are on display in major stores! Families are preparing for the back-to-school season! While many children find this to be an exciting time, parents are feeling the anxiety of the expenses ahead. Let’s face it, school supplies are pricey – many folks report spending nearly $100 just on the supplies needed for elementary age children! Some are unable to afford this type of expense, even for education. As a result, children suffer.
Children who start their first day of school without the necessary school supplies feel embarrassed. They lack the confidence to connect with their peer group. This rocky start sets the tone for the rest of the school year. Unfortunately students can unknowingly segregate themselves into the “haves” and the” have-nots.”
Bluffton Self Help works directly with the Bluffton community school social workers to make sure the children in need receive the supplies to get them off to a great start! (Visit Bluffton Self Help’s Facebook page to hear one social worker say thank you!!!)
According to Kidsinneedfoundation.org, children without school supplies have lower attendance rates, are more likely to do poorly in school, and eventually drop out. Without an education they are more likely to get in trouble, be unemployed, and have no future.
Luckily, you can help! Spread kindness by helping the children in our community. When you’re at the store shopping with your own children or grandchildren, please consider picking up a few extra items and dropping them off at Bluffton Self Help. We’ll make sure they get to the Bluffton kids who need them!
Every child deserves to start the school year with all of the supplies they need. You can help!
“Children need a good education today to have hope for a better tomorrow. Going to school is one of the best ways to break the cycle of hunger and poverty.” ~ feedthechildren.org
