Building relationships through education is a key pillar of our mission, from the almost 400 adult learners taking classes such as ESL, GED and Citizenship classes, to our monthly workshops, and multiple programs within all ten Bluffton public schools. We cannot do our work alone.
Together, we are combating hunger for children during school, allowing students to focus on learning, by collecting school snacks for 10 Bluffton area public schools.
School Snacks | SUPPORT STUDENTS | August 7th – May 7th
The research is clear: hungry children experience many negative mental and behavioral outcomes. Food security, however, strongly influences positive mental health outcomes in children and teens. When schools can ensure that students have access to the nutritious food they need, they are better equipped to learn and thrive.
Unfortunately, many teachers must pay for snacks out of their own pockets to provide for children who are unable or forgot to bring snacks from home. To ensure every child is ready to learn, we provide free snacks all year long through our School Snack Closet, available at each Bluffton public school.
“Our school days are long, and they seem even longer when little bellies came to school without breakfast and do not get to eat until after 12 noon. The snack program that was started at Bluffton Self Help has been a lifesaver to those students that need that extra piece of nutrition to hold them over until lunch time. Without this program the money would be coming directly out of the pockets of the classroom teachers or the “rainy day” fund that some schools have.
Please consider supporting this program so we, the community, can continue to help feed bellies of students and help put a smile on their faces.” – Okatie Elementary
