Jaron joined Bluffton Self Help’s GED Preparation Program in August 2022. During the fall semester, he tackled math and social studies courses, and currently, he is enrolled in language arts and science courses. Jaron initially came into the program with the goal of earning his GED to advance himself in his education and career. But there was something else Jaron was striving for – confidence in himself. When Jaron first started in the program, he was shy and a bit reserved. Despite feeling nervous, Jaron decided to study hard and challenge himself by going out of his comfort zone and forming friendships with his tutors and fellow students. After two semesters of hard work, Jaron now comes into class smiling, eager to learn, and engaged with his fellow students.
And it isn’t just the Bluffton Self Help staff noticing the huge progress Jaron has made. A few weeks ago, one of BSH’s new volunteers came to shadow the Reasoning Through Language Arts class Jaron is currently taking. She knew Jaron from a while back when they worked together at the Boys & Girls Club. When Jaron saw her, he went up, asked her how she had been, and gave her a big hug. The volunteer left that day with tears in her eyes, commenting about the incredible transformation she saw in Jaron.
His next goal is to take all four GED subject tests by the end of summer. We know with his newfound confidence and the help of his tutors; he will have no problem accomplishing this goal as well. Sometimes it takes a village to help us reach our goals and we know Jaron couldn’t have done it without his peers consistently encouraging him and laughing with him.
