Becoming a Bigger Part of Your Community
Written by: Carrie Spencer
We all know this life is full of challenges, especially lately. With social distancing guidelines and other pandemic-related concerns, finding ways to remain plugged into the community, much less feel like you’re making a contribution, can be particularly difficult. With that in mind, we put together some resources to help you make a positive impact in your community.
Helping the Homeless
No one should do without their essentials. Among those essentials is putting a roof overhead.
● Homelessness is an ongoing issue, and those without a home are particularly vulnerable, but there are several ways you can help.
● Another way to help the homeless is to donate to Habitat for Humanity. In fact, there are many different ways that you can get involved!
● As people face financial or health worries, some pets are being displaced, but there are ways you can assist them as well.
Tackling Hunger
Sometimes needs are right in front of us, but knowing how to respond is where we fall short. Hunger certainly is one of those issues. Here are some of the ways you can help.
● Volunteer at Bluffton Self Help to prepare and distribute food to needy neighbors.
● If you have a vulnerable neighbor, you can take a box of nonperishable staples and leave it on their front porch.
● Gardeners can donate fresh foods to their local food banks.
● Another idea is to participate in a community garden to help fill empty plates with nutritious food.
Other Ideas
Are you looking for other ways to plug in? Meeting others’ needs, either formally or through an organization, is altered in many ways by the pandemic. At the same time, opportunities abound.
● Do you know how to sew? Many organizations are in need of homemade masks.
● Everyone is aware of the remote work situation, but did you know that you can also volunteer remotely?
This is a challenging time, but doing for others is a great way to feel better about yourself and your world. Look for ways to assist, whether it’s helping with shelter, filling empty plates, or something entirely different. Your contribution might seem small, but together we can make the world a better place.
