Andrea Ordóñez
Andrea began the year quiet and reserved but has blossomed into a confident, eager student. She has set herself apart by showing great determination and dedication to learning the English language.
Andrea attends class regularly and arrives prepared and anxious to learn. Even following two dental appointments that left her feeling miserable, she attended class and participated fully. She is consistently punctual and engages in all activities.
Although Andrea began the semester with test scores of Lower Level 1, she progressed to scoring 91 on her mid-term exam. Her significant advancement indicates that she has made great strides in reading, writing, and comprehending the English language.
Andrea works at a local flower shop, both with the public and behind the scenes preparing beautiful floral arrangements. In class, she will often ask for assistance with pronunciation as she wants to increase her ability to interact with customers and serve them better. Andrea has also independently completed an online tax preparation program to assist family and friends with completing their income tax filing. Although this will not be a paid position, she wanted to be able to use her strong accounting skills to help others.
Over the course of the year, Andrea has proven to be a peer instructor, clarifier, and role model. She will often provide detailed instruction to her classmates on new concepts and group activities in a calm and supportive way. I occasionally notice the other students look to her when they begin to answer to ensure they are understanding and responding appropriately. A smile or nod of her head encourages them to proceed.
Andrea also brings a delightful element of laughter to the class as she often giggles as she repeatedly tries to pronounce difficult words like “sore throat”, “drawer” and “broccoli”. Her willingness to keep trying has encouraged others to be less self-conscious and more willing to try, even if they struggle as well.
Andrea rarely lets class end without asking about a homework assignment. As I watch her circle the pages, I can see that she has completed the prior week’s homework assignments. Her dedication to learning, both in and outside of the classroom, is evident.
Andrea is a young woman with a great deal of potential and determination. She exemplifies Joe Distelheim’s belief that education is a gateway to success and an opportunity for her to achieve her future goals. Her commitment to assisting both her classmates and others further demonstrates why Andrea is an excellent nominee for this award.
