Our education and training programs help adults acquire the basic skills they need – reading, writing, math, English language proficiency, and problem-solving – to be productive workers, family members, and citizens. At Bluffton Self Help’s four Learning & Literacy Centers, neighbors attend adult education classes and workshops, and have access to computers and the internet to navigate career resources and connect with local employers. Our neighbors receive the support they need to reach their individualized goals on their path to success.
For many of our adult students, these classes are a way to better engage with and give back to the community. Their goals are to improve their English skills, to be able to advocate for themselves at the doctor’s office, communicate with the child’s teacher, gain better employment, or engage more with the community.
But as many of our volunteers will tell you, they get more out of their time in class than the students do. When asked what the best thing about their volunteer experience at Bluffton Self Help is, here is what a few of them had to say:
“Feeling like I’m helping those in need to improve their quality of life.”
“The organization and streamlining of training, teaching, and staffing is much improved and BSH makes volunteers feel needed and appreciated. I love the interactions with our students and want to help them improve their lives in this country.”
“Hearing expressions of thanks from our neighbors and how well the volunteers work together to support the community. The staff listens to any suggestions offered and works to find the best outcome.”
“I absolutely love my ESL students. They are so eager to learn and to do a good job and are so appreciative of the education they’re receiving. Their collective progress is so rewarding for me as a volunteer. It seems like a true win-win!”
If you are interested in helping someone improve their literacy skills, learn to speak English, earn their GED, or prepare themselves for the workforce, we invite you to volunteer at one of Bluffton Self Help’s Learning & Literacy Centers.
With locations in Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Hardeeville, classes meet two times a week for two hours for 16 weeks.
