From Volunteer to Board Member to Couples Who Serve

by | Mar 16, 2025

After retiring to Bluffton in 2021, Mike Slovak joined Bluffton Self Help as an ESL tutor in 2023 and recently added BSH Board Member to his title last month. His wife, Denise, joined the team as a Red Apron last fall, first as a greeter for The Resource Hub’s welcome desk, followed by becoming more involved with the Emergency Financial Assistance program in addition to supporting the annual Holiday Toy Shop.

Having moved throughout Mike’s military and corporate career, the Slovaks welcomed the opportunity to learn about and contribute to their new community. When asked about their “why” for choosing BSH as their new home for vesting their time and talents, the Slovaks replied, “We feel that volunteering with Bluffton Self Help is the ideal way to assist our Lowcountry neighbors (with their) transition to a better path forward in their lives.” In their free time, Mike and Denise enjoy golfing, traveling, and spending time with their granddaughters.
