Carl’s Story

by | Jan 11, 2025

Carl is a full-time hospice care patient with a wife who is also navigating multiple health issues. Regardless, Carl – a proud man, reluctant to ask for help – continues to manage the household as best as he can. After living in the same apartment for eight years, Carl was shocked to learn his rent increased by $500 a month when his lease came up for renewal.

Not sure what to do, he reached out to Bluffton Self Help where he was assisted with a full month’s rent in addition to free weekly grocery delivery to his home, providing him with flexibility to allocate the savings to other important portions of his household budget.

The staff at Bluffton Self Help also identified additional community partners able to provide Carl and his wife with much-needed services, allowing them to focus on their health and personal care without the added stress of managing a household under duress.

It’s not uncommon for a neighbor to experience hesitation when it comes to seeking assistance; however, when one views asking for help as a sign of courage and resourcefulness vs. something to feel embarrassed about, that important shift in perspective helps conquer the unnecessary barrier of stigma.
