We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for Joe Kern’s invaluable work and dedication to his students. A tutor since 2023, he embarked on his BSH volunteer journey by leading ESL conversation classes on Hilton Head Island during last year’s summer bootcamp. He found joy in tutoring and remained active through fall of 2023 and spring of 2024 teaching ESL Level 3 students on the island. A few weeks out from the start of this summer’s bootcamp, we struggled to find an evening GED science tutor. After sending an appeal to our tutor roster in hopes that someone would be willing to take the class, Joe responded that he was willing to help in addition to committing to another evening tutoring ESL at the Hilton Head location. He volunteered for this GED assignment knowing that taking this class would require him to drive to Bluffton during the off-island exodus every Monday evening. Not only is he dedicated to the mission, but Joe’s interactions with students show his kindness, understanding, and passion for teaching. His impact is profound, as his students have repeatedly expressed gratitude for his patience and guidance. Joe’s active participation in our student and tutor events, where he engages with students, other volunteers, and staff, is a testament to his dedication. We are truly fortunate to have him serve as a red apron tutor.
