Surviving Summer in Sub-Optimal Housing

by | Jul 8, 2025

As temperatures soar into the 90s and beyond while combining with brutally intense humidity, it’s important not to forget our neighbors living in sub-optimal housing, lacking basic protection against the sweltering summer sun.

These homes are often without properly functioning air conditioning or fans. Additionally, many have poor insulation, significant roofing issues, or broken windows.

Heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke are serious risks, especially when neighbors in need choose between affording utilities or basic needs such as putting food on the table.

Who Is Most Affected?

Families struggling with high utility costs,

Elderly residents living in aging homes,

Essential workers who come home from hot job sites to hotter houses.

Just to name a few.

At Bluffton Self Help, we help by holistically working with individuals, families, and senior citizens to not only find ways to improve daily life but to discover sustainable solutions geared to build a brighter future:

Our Emergency Financial Assistance helps keep utilities running – especially during critical times such as a heatwave.

Our guided and compassionate access to community resources helps create a comprehensive network of support for neighbors in need.

And The Market – our free, wellness grocery store provides equitable access to food and quality nutrition while saving neighbors $500 per month – money that can be allocated to much needed home repairs or utility bills.

We can’t do any of this work alone. The community has always been the backbone of our mission. Financial gifts help us help our neighbors who are working hard to make ends meet.

Every dollar makes a profound, local impact. We invite you to learn more about helping make a difference HERE.
