When neighbors walk through the doors of The Market at Bluffton Self Help, they are greeted with more than groceries. They are met with dignity, opportunity, and the support of a community that believes in the power of lending a helping hand. Thanks to the generous support of Publix Super Markets, that support continues to grow.
Bluffton Self Help is grateful to recognize Publix for generous grant gifted to the organization in October, which is helping ensure families across the Lowcountry have low-barrier, equitable access to healthy, nutritious food and essential household items.
The Market operates much like a traditional grocery store, where neighbors can choose the items that best meet their family’s needs. At Bluffton Self Help, we believe there is dignity in choice. When families can access healthy food in a way that feels familiar, respectful, and empowering, dignity organically becomes part of the experience.
The need for this work continues to grow. In 2024 alone, Bluffton Self Help distributed 562,903 pounds of groceries to local families, and the number of households utilizing The Market rose 31% year over year, both record-breaking numbers. A total of 1,210 families shopped in The Market throughout the year, saving an estimated $500 per month in groceries, clothing, and hygiene items.
In 2025, demand continues to rise. We estimate that 1,500 to 1,600 families—approximately 4,000 individuals—will rely on The Market this year alone. Meeting that need requires strong community partnerships. For decades, Publix has demonstrated a deep commitment to strengthening the communities it serves, and their support of Bluffton Self Help reflects a shared belief that access to food is fundamental.
We are deeply grateful to Publix for believing in our mission, supporting our work, and serving as a valued community partner.
Together, Bluffton Self Help and Publix Super Markets are helping ensure that when neighbors walk through the doors of The Market, they are met not only with food, but with dignity, opportunity, and the support of a community that cares. Through partnerships like this, we continue to demonstrate what is possible when organizations come together with a shared commitment to building a healthier, more resilient Lowcountry.
