When Alicia moved from Indianapolis to Bluffton, South Carolina, she had two priorities at the top of her list: finding a unique, welcoming community and discovering meaningful ways to give back.
Her family ultimately chose Daufuskie Island as their home—a choice that meant Alicia’s commute to the classroom would be longer than most. But she wasn’t the least bit swayed. Instead, she embraced the journey: golf cart to ferry to car, and back again, all to reach the classroom where she serves as an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor.
“It’s such an honor to be a part of a student’s journey. I feel so grateful to Bluffton Self Help for allowing me to be a part of that.”
The Impact of Volunteer Tutors
Volunteer tutors are the heart of Bluffton Self Help’s mission. With patience, compassion, and dedication, they empower adults seeking a second chance through education. In 2024 alone, our volunteers donated 27,730 hours of service, a contribution valued at $928,680.
Through their work, volunteers like Alicia not only transform the lives of individual students—they strengthen the fabric of our community. Every lesson taught, every hour given, creates ripple effects that go far beyond the classroom.
